The Problem
Noble Environmental faced operational and compliance challenges at one of its landfills, requiring a reliable flare package and control system for safe operation, continuous monitoring, and secure data logging. To prevent potential methane releases and protect equipment integrity, they needed a modern, integrated solution that could manage variable gas flows while maintaining consistent ignition and ensuring environmental compliance.

The Profire Solution
To enhance ignition reliability, flame verification, and operator visibility at Noble Environmental’s Chestnut Valley RNG plant, Profire developed a candlestick flare with an integrated PF3100 BMS controller. This single-strategy solution manages the entire flare workflow, providing operators with clear status confirmation and immediate alerts for abnormal conditions.
By centralizing safety logic and flame monitoring, the system improves safeguards and daily reliability without adding operational complexity.
Key features of the solution include:
- PF3100 BMS Controller: Integrated into the plant control system, the PF3100 manages the flare safety logic, permissives, and shutdowns while logging events.
- FSI Pilot Ignition and Monitoring: A propane-powered FSI pilot provides a consistent ignition sequence and confirmed flame status at the flare top.
- Main Safety Shut-Off Valve Control: Automated valve control manages inlet gas for reliable ignition and isolates the flare when conditions are unsafe.
- Over-Pressure Bypass Valve Integration: The inlet bypass valve diverts flow to the flare during over-pressure events to protect upstream equipment.
- Temperature Monitoring and Protection: Inline temperature monitoring at the detonation arrestor ensures high-temperature shutdown.
- Dual Flare-Top Sensors: Provide ignition proving, redundancy, and temperature feedback to the control system.
- Plant Communications Integration: Signals and alarms integrate with the site’s primary control system, so operators can troubleshoot faster and stay aware of flare operating conditions.
This new solution not only met compliance requirements, but also delivered operational advantages:
- Reliable ignition and flame verification, even under varying gas conditions.
- Faster responses to high-temperature and over-pressure events.
- Improved operator visibility for smoother daily operations.
- Enhanced protection for upstream assets, ensuring safe, efficient plant operation.
The Result
By implementing the PF3100-based controls, the Chestnut Valley RNG plant successfully established a robust flare safety and control system. The commissioning process, which included sensor calibration and validation under real-world conditions, confirmed that all logic and instrumentation perform as intended.
This new system not only improves operational confidence for routine gas management but also ensures accurate, reliable responses to abnormal events, ultimately helping the facility manage the inherent variability of landfill gas service.
