Methane Abatement and the Role of Burner Management Technology
By Profire TeamJuly 31, 2024
Did you know? At Profire we’re always searching for new opportunities to promote environmental protection initiatives.
Recently, Qnergy, based in Ogden, UT, reached out for our burner & combustion management solutions for a methane abatement project, and we eagerly jumped at the opportunity. In partnership with their current technology, we developed a Methane Destruction System that simultaneously destroys volatile greenhouse gases and creates renewable energy.
Combining our powerful PF2200 BMS Controller with their state-of-the-art PowerGen 5650 Generator, we created a system that turns volatile greenhouse gases into renewable energy. So, what’s the big deal? It destroys dangerous methane emissions through efficient combustion management!
Here’s what’s important about this initiative:
It’s being successfully piloted at a local landfill in Weber County, UT,
It’s cutting ~95% of harmful emissions with our PF2200 BMS Controller, AND
It’s feeding renewable energy back into the local power grid
What is Methane Abatement?
Methane Abatement is the reduction or destruction of volatile methane emissions using specific technologies and techniques. In 2022, the global energy sector was responsible for nearly 135 million tons of methane emissions. Because of this, there’s a strong push to reduce emissions in the energy sector.
By capturing harmful emissions and converting them into renewable energy, we can protect the environment, enhance safety, and promote cleanliness in our communities. This paves the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Developing a Methane Destruction System
To develop our solutions for the project, we designed an enclosed flare system based on the expected fuel composition and flow dynamics of the planned Methane Destruction System. By discussing Qnergy’s project needs and requirements, we understood the challenges this intricate system could experience during operation. This information helped us develop the burner & combustion management solutions needed for the project to succeed.
With these key factors in mind, we assisted in developing a system that utilizes our PF2200 BMS Controller to perfectly align with the project’s efficiency, performance, and value needs. Combined with Qnergy’s innovative PowerGen 5650, our 2200 BMS controller effectively controls the final destruction of these gases with an enclosed flare system, and a specialized fuel train custom-built for the project.
The fuel train features regulation, vital safety shutoff solenoids, an inline flame arrestor, and a pilot assembly complete with two proof-of-flame safeguards, including a flame rod for the pilot and a UV scanner for the main burner, that boost operational safety and reliability. Altogether, the Methane Destruction System transforms volatile gases into sustainable, renewable energy, and cleans up the local environment for generations to come.
Where it’s Making an Impact
This incredible technology is currently being piloted in Weber County, Utah, tackling gases at a closed landfill affecting the nearby river and park. The Methane Destruction System aims to cut 95% of these harmful gas emissions.
Through this pilot program, we are exploring ways to further optimize these systems and support methane abatement projects like yours. We are excited to apply our findings to future opportunities!
