Dual Candlestick Flare for RNG Facility Expansion
Custom-engineered dual candlestick flare system designed to meet expanded gas volumes and EPA compliance requirements at one of the largest RNG facilities in the U.S. Tell us more about your projectProject Highlights
- 12,000 SCFM Flare Capacity
- Custom Dual Candlestick Flare Design
- NFPA 86 Safety Compliance
- Real-Time Pilot Verification
- EPA-Compliant Data Logging
- Remote Monitoring & Control
- Continuous & Intermittent Pilot Options
- Annual Preventive Maintenance Program
The Problem
The Archaea, a BP-Subsidiary, Assai RNG facility in Scranton, PA, faced a critical challenge during its multi-phase expansion. Its existing flare system could not support increased gas volumes, creating compliance risks under stringent EPA regulations.
The plant required a flare solution capable of safely combusting off-spec gas diverted from the pipeline, ensuring environmental compliance and operational continuity. With daily fines looming and critical requirements for production uptime, the customer needed a rapid, reliable, scalable solution.

The Profire Solution
After analyzing the site’s gas composition and operational needs, Profire engineered a custom dual candlestick flare system tailored to the plant’s specifications. Key elements included:
- Dual Candlestick Flare Package – Designed for 12,000 SCFM capacity and ~78 ft height, with heat radiation modeling to ensure ground-level safety.
- Safety-Rated Control System – Remote operation capability, redundant valve control, and NFPA 86 compliance.
- Dual PF2100F Controllers – Provides real-time pilot verification and continuous data logging for EPA compliance.
- Flexible Ignition Options – Continuous or intermittent pilot with auto/on-demand ignition.
- Custom Valve Train & Piping Skid – 10-inch valve train integrated with detonation arrestor for explosion prevention.
This solution not only met compliance requirements, but also delivered operational advantages:
- Supporting emergency gas diversion without plant shutdown.
- Enhancing safety through remote monitoring and reduced on-site exposure.
- Providing robust documentation and data logging for regulatory audits.
The Results
Since its commissioning in December 2022, the dual candlestick flare system has remained fully operational, successfully managing the plant’s expanded 12,000 SCFM capacity.
By integrating a safety-rated control system and pilot control, the solution has ensured continuous EPA compliance, while enabling emergency gas diversion without costly plant shutdowns. The custom valve train and remote monitoring capabilities have significantly mitigated compliance risks and enhanced operational safety through robust data logging for audits.
Profire continues to provide annual preventive maintenance, ensuring the long-term reliability and efficiency of this critical infrastructure.
